Vishu is a significant festival celebrated primarily in Kerala, India, marking the beginning of the Malayalam New Year. It usually falls in the middle of April, according to the solar calendar. The celebration of Vishu signifies the importance of prosperity and abundance in one’s life.
💐Vishu Kani:💐 One of the most important elements of Vishu is the 'Vishu Kani, ' which literally means 'the first thing seen on the day of Vishu after waking up.' The Vishu Kani is carefully arranged the night before and is the first sight upon waking on the morning of Vishu. It includes a grand display of various fruits, vegetables, grains, holy texts, coins, and mirrors, all arranged around the deity Krishna. The belief is that good things seen on this day will bring prosperity throughout the year.
💐Vishu Sadhya💐: Another hallmark of Vishu is the 'Sadhya, ' a special feast prepared and enjoyed by families. This meal is a multi-course spread with about 24 dishes served on a banana leaf, featuring a range of flavors from sweet and salty to sour and bitter. It symbolically represents the essence of life.
💐Vishu Kaineettam💐: 'Kaineettam' is a tradition of giving money, which is considered to be a token of good luck. Elders in the family distribute tokens of money to the younger members and others in the community, wishing them prosperity and good fortune for the year ahead.
🌹Fireworks and Celebrations🌹: Fireworks and crackers are also a significant part of the celebration, with people of all ages participating in the festivities to mark the joyous occasion.
Vishu is not only a cultural festival but also a day filled with spiritual significance, reflecting the traditional Malayali's close connection to nature and their devotion to God. It’s a time of renewal and reflection, encouraging people to start afresh with vigor and hope. On this day, people greet each other with wishes of prosperity and success, making it a festive occasion celebrated with much enthusiasm and joy across Kerala and among Malayali communities worldwide.
